How Do Dry Herb Vaporizers Work?

Dry herb vaporizers work by heating to a temperature that vaporizes herbs (producing vapour) - rather than combusting them (producing smoke). This is accomplished through the use of conduction or convection heating, or a combination of both.

Conduction heating involves heating of the dry herb material itself. The herbs in the chamber are in direct contact with the heat source and air is passed through the heated herbs to create a vapour which is then inhaled.

Alternatively, convection works by heating the air that passes through the herbs, which vaporizes the terpenes and cannabinoids allowing them to be inhaled.

Dry herb vapes work by placing your herbal material into the chamber, which is then heated by one of these heating methods. As the heat reaches a specific temperature the herbs vaporize and the user inhales the vapor.

Different temperatures can be used to activate different terpenes and cannabinoids in the herbs. A balance between taste and effect can be achieved by setting the vaporizer to different temperatures.

Using a dry herb vaporizer is easy. All you need to do is grind the herbs, pack them in the chamber, turn it on and when it’s warmed up you’re ready to vape.

Dry herb vapes are designed to primarily work with dry herbs, however many are also capable of vaporizing waxes and other concentrates with the addition of a ‘concentrate pad’ or insert that is put into the chamber.

Although most dry herb vaporizers can be used with concentrates, a more specific type of vape designed with the use of waxes and concentrates as its primary function will usually produce better results.

What Dry Herbs Can You Use in a Dry Herb Vaporizer?

As the name implies, you can use any type of dry herb inside of a dry herb vaporizer.

Dry herb vaporizers may be typically used to vaporize cannabis but they can also be used to vaporize any other type of dried herbs used for aromatherapy.

Some alternative examples of dry herbs that can be used in a vaporizer are chamomile, lavender, green tea, peppermint and even mugwort to name a few.

How Do THC and CBD Oil Vaporizers Work?

Cannabis oil vaporizers work differently to dry herb vaporizers due to the material being used in oil vapes.

Typically, THC and CBD oil vaporizers come equipped with four main components - the mouthpiece, the battery, heating element and the cartridge.

The cartridge is filled with THC or CBD oil, which is then heated by the battery and the attached heating element. The vapour is then inhaled via the mouthpiece above the cartridge.

The ‘oil’ used to vape CBD isn’t the same as the concentrated CBD oils and tinctures that are available to ingest orally or apply topically. CBD oil for vaping is sometimes referred to as ‘CBD Vape juice’ or CBD distillate. Generally, they are made using food grade ingredients and can be taken orally but they are very different to oil based tinctures.

Some CBD vape juices are flavoured with either natural terpenes or artificial flavouring additives which is another factor to consider when deciding between dry herb or oil vapes.

The notable aspect of THC and CBD oil vaporizers is that the cartridges are normally reusable and refillable. This makes them more customizable, especially if you have two different oils that you would like to blend together. For example, natural terpenes can be added to enhance or alter the flavour.

If you are going to vape CBD, make sure it’s the correct type of CBD ‘oil’ that has been prepared specifically for vaping

Ease of Use

THC and CBD oil vaporizers are incredibly easy to use and offer a ‘plug and play’ feel. All users need to do is charge the battery, connect the cartridge and begin vaping. Voila! It’s that simple.

Different types of cannabis oil vapes

Not all THC and CBD oil vaporizers are created equal. There are various types of oil vaporizers, such as one-time-use vape pens and ones that use refillable cartridges. Furthermore, each of these types of oil-based vaporizers have a wide array of functions.

Let’s take a look at what oil-based vaporizers have to offer.

One-Time-Use Vape Pens

One-time-use or disposable vape pens are incredibly popular because they are the pinnacle of convenience. Normally these types of vape pens don’t even require you to push a button, simply begin inhaling and the pen will start vaping.

However, ‘one time use’ vape pens are discarded once the oil is depleted. The onboard battery does not have a long life - which is why it’s not recommended to try to continue use after the oil is finished.

Refillable ‘Oil’ Vapes

Refillable Vape Pens offer onboard chambers or removable cartridges that the user can fill with any type of oil. Typically, refillable vape pens are much more customizable and are technologically superior to disposable vape pens.

Both Dry herb vaporizers and refillable oil vapes have more powerful batteries, and will usually have custom controls that allow users to fine tune the temperature to have a heightened vaping experience and target specific flavor profiles.

The flavours of the terpenes that are found in both dry herb and cannabis based oils vaporize at specific temperatures, which means that custom temperature controls can provide a flavoursome experience.

Refillable Vape Pens are viewed as more worthwhile investments if you plan on vaping various types of oils - especially CBD or THC oil.

Pros and Cons of Dry Herb Vaporizers and Oil-Based Vaporizers

Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of dry herb vaporizers and THC and CBD oil vapes.  Although each has positive attributes, your specific needs will determine which vaporizer is right for you.

Battery Life

When it comes to battery life, THC and CBD oil vaporizers take the win.

Dry herb vaporizers require more heating power to vaporize densely packed herbs, which quickly drains the overall battery. However, THC and CBD oil vaporizers with a multitude of features may quickly drain in battery life as well.

Many Dry herb vaporizers have an easily replaceable battery which can overcome this and extend your session without the need to recharge.

Convenience

Once again, THC and CBD oil vaporizers win on this angle - to an extent. If we’re talking about disposable vaporizers, these win the battle of convenience.

Dry herbs vaporizers require you to grind the herb and pack it into the chamber. The same goes for more involved refillable vape pens, which requires you to carefully pour viscous THC or CBD oil into the chamber.

The Clean-Up Process

Hands down - dry herb vapes excel in this department. Removing the spent dry herb is incredibly straightforward - and there’s very little residual content to clean up. Compare that with oil-based vapes which can leave a sticky mess behind.

Dry herb vapes can be cleaned in a matter of seconds and reloaded just as quickly. THC and CBD oil vapes on the other hand require a bit more maintenance to ensure the residual content is removed.

Which is best for you?

As you can see,dry herb vaporizers and THC and CBD oil vaporizers offer exceptional features for those that wish to vape. Each type of vaporizer is geared towards a certain subset, such as those who tend to vape dry herbs and those who prefer to vape CBD or THC-based oil.

Ultimately, your preference between dry herbs and THC or CBD based oil will dictate which vaporizer you choose.

Vaping has opened the door to a smoke free lifestyle that’s positively impacting the way we consume cannabis in its many different forms. Regardless of your choice, the herbal vaping experience is an exciting way to enjoy your herbs or oil.
